Do any Dragons know much about North Carolina (Winston-Salem in particular)? I recently accepted a job offer at a hospital down there, and I'm getting ready to move. Where are the best bookstores? Are there any SF/F books based in that area? Of course, I would be interested in hearing non-literary-centric information, too. :) Aug 20, 2009, 8:36am (top)Message 2: karenmarieI'm a North Carolina Dragon, buchleser. I live about 75 miles from Winston-Salem in a small town called Pittsboro (south of Chapel Hill). I moved here 18 years ago and love living here. I don't know any details about Winston-Salem except that it's the home Salem College, where my mother-in-law graduated (1953). Maybe we could have a North Carolina get together sometime after you settle in. Other NC Dragons - are you game? Danny - Congrats on the new job! Thanks, Dr N! Karenmarie, I'd certainly be interested in a North Carolina get-together, so long as I have a few months to get settled first! Aug 20, 2009, 2:16pm (top)Message 5: karenmarieWhen are you moving? Or have you already arrived? Moving this weekend. Starting work Monday. Zoom! Aug 20, 2009, 6:57pm (top)Message 7: GeorgiaDawnCongratulations, Danny! Wow! That sounds like a really rapid transition to make. But congrats! Congratulations, Danny, and welcome to the Tar Heel state, even if you're moving into Demon Deacon territory. Mrs53 and I have lived in NC since 1978. We're in Durham, just over an hour east of you, and we go through or around W-S all the time on the way to the mountains. I can tell you more about bookstores, especially used ones (the books), in the Triangle than in the Triad. I'm sure it won't take you long to find some good places. Good luck with all the settling-in details and getting started on the new job. I'm definitely up for an NC get-together. I had proposed one a while back but it didn't get anywhere. Aug 20, 2009, 10:11pm (top)Message 10: BritAnniaWelcome to NC and congratulations! Aug 29, 2009, 9:58am (top)Message 11: buchleserHi, guys, and thank you for all the congratulations and welcomes! I am moved, and have just completed my first week on the job. What a wonderful opportunity this job is for me! However, I get the feeling that I am going to be a far less common sight in the Pub -- sorry, everyone. I'll be around, though, never you fear. Goals for this weekend: Unpack the few lingering boxes, explore Winston-Salem, and research what needs researching before heading into Week Two. Thanks again, everyone! Aug 30, 2009, 3:11pm (top)Message 12: karenmarieWelcome to NC, buchleser! This week's weather looks to be good. Hope your second week goes well. Nov 7, 2009, 7:45am (top)Message 13: buchleserHey, guys! Have you seen the list of Waldenbooks that are going to be closing in January? Take a look here: Waldenbooks list See North Carolina? Eight Waldenbooks are closing! Eight! Does that leave ANY open in our state at all? ...On a completely different topic, now that I'm settled and since I've reopened this thread, I'd like to informally propose that we start thinking about a NC Green Dragon get-together. Winter or summer? Triad or Triangle or Charlotte? Another option for a get-together (or something folks might want to do individually) is Stellarcon -- a science fiction and fantasy literary convention coming up in March, in High Point, which is about as central a location as we can hope to get. I've been a guest there for the past two years, and it really is one of the best SFF conventions in the region, IMHO. What do you guys think? Nov 9, 2009, 8:56am (top)Message 14: Jim53I'm up for a get-together, although it would be pretty tough to do it before the first of the year. Nov 10, 2009, 7:12am (top)Message 15: buchleserI agree, Jim -- 2010 is better. ...I'll start a new thread on this topic in a month or so. Sorry I haven't responded..... I've got 6 family members flying in from California tomorrow, and am feeding 17 on Thanksgiving. !!!
Anyway, I'd love to do something in the new year - I hope things are going well for you buchleser and that NC is treating you well. Debug test: your member name is: |
